Nintendo originally opened its doors in the Kagiya-cho district of Kyoto. This former headquarters was reborn as a hotel crowned with the name Marufuku, which had been used as the trade name of the founder. The building fuses the existing edifice, which retains the architecture of the 1930s, and new ones with designs in the spirit of Tadao Ando. Ando supervised the overall design, and NOM Architectural Design Office and Suppose Design Office participated in it.

Early Showa style
The 1930s correspond with the early part of the Showa era. The pre-existing Marufukuro was built at a time when Japan was heading for the Second World War. In appearance, the architecture is of the imperial crown style, which was in vogue in this period, and the Western-style building has a roof topped with Japanese-style tile. The art-deco interior taking geometric patterns as motifs and the stained glass are left from the 1930s. Over the decades after headquarter was moved, the building was carefully managed, and some furniture left from that period are still in use today. A style spanning the generations became part of the furnishings at harmony with hospitality in the current age.
Marufukuro is divided into four buildings including the new ones. The buildings are named after the four card suits, i.e., Spade, Heart, Clover, and Diamond. The Diamond is the newly built edifice, and the others are the pre-existing ones.
Four mutually different buildings
The Spade Building containing the reception room has a basic tone of deep red. In addition to a guest lounge that used to serve as a drawing (reception) room, it has a bar and a library that was designed by SUPPOSE DESIGN OFFICE and is only for the use of guests staying at the hotel. The library offers books that were selected by BACH, and is decorated with pieces of art in keeping with the character of Nintendo, by artists including Daniel Arsham, Kanji Hasegawa, and Rhizomatiks.
The Heart Building is located where the residence of the Yamauchi family, the founding family, lived. It has a distinctive entrance reminiscent of a Japanese-style home. The Superior King Room corresponds to the room that was once the parlor, and still has the original fireplace with mutually different tile designs. In the common-use space on the third floor, one can also find tiling left from the 1930s by the washstand.
From red to blue space
The Clover Building used to be a warehouse, and therefore has few decorations and a high ceiling. The Balcony King Room in it likewise has a high ceiling with a liberating flair and balcony exclusively for the occupying guests. In contrast to the deep red of the Spade Building, the basic tone is emerald green. The freight elevator accents the common-use space.
The Diamond Building was born when Marufukuro opened its doors in 2022. It contains the suite with a name taken from the hotel: Marufukuro Suite. The rooms fuse the pre-existing and new buildings, so guests can enjoy the features of both. The sofas for two were reportedly used in the pre-existing buildings, right from the past. There are a table and chairs for four on the expansive private balcony.
The stone paving in the outer passages and tiling on the outer walls are also from the early days and still in use without any modifications. Kyoto is a wonderful city for taking a stroll, but overnight guests might also have a lot of fun exploring the details of the hotel’s architecture, with one of the various beverages offered free of charge in hand.
