Living in Paris

僕の仕事は、撮影や取材のために、しばしば国外へと足を運ぶことが多い。そのため、空港を行き来することも日常的な出来事になっている。最初のころは空港から帰ってきても、まだ冒険を続けているような感覚があった。今ではパリに着くと、何だかホッとした気持ちになる。住み始めて一年が経ち、少しずつ自分のホームタウンになりつつあるんだと思う。

My job requires me to go abroad on occasion for shoots and interviews. I routinely travel between my home and the airport. When I initially got back from the airport, I felt like I was still on my adventure. I now feel relieved when I return to Paris. It has been a year since I moved here, and I suppose it is gradually becoming my hometown.

2019年に発生した火災で、パリの象徴の一つであるノートルダム大聖堂は大きな被害を受けてしまった。5年もの月日をかけた修復作業が進み、ようやく2024年の12月に一般公開が再開。地元や世界中からたくさんの訪問者が集まり、毎日長蛇の列ができるようになった。とはいえ、実際にはまだすべての修復が完了しているわけではない。大聖堂の側面や裏側などでは工事が続いている。完全に修復された姿を見ることができるのは、もう少し先になるだろう。

In 2019, a fire devastated Notre Dame Cathedral, one of Paris’s most iconic landmarks. After five years of restoration, it reopened to the public in December 2024. The cathedral is a major tourist destination that draws tourists from all over the world, with huge queues forming every day. However, the repair work remains incomplete. Work continues on the cathedral’s sides and back. It will be some time before we can see the cathedral in its fully restored glory.

パリの街を歩けば、平日だってカフェのテラスはおしゃべりでにぎやかだ。カフェは本当にそこら中にあって、どの通りにも小さなテーブルと椅子が並んでいる。冬の冷たい空気の中でも、なぜかみんな外に座りたがるのが不思議だ。昼休みには、ふと目をやると修道服を着たシスターたちが卓球で盛り上がっていたりする。真剣な顔でラリーしているかと思えば、笑い声が響いてきて、そのギャップがなんだかいい。パリはそんな風に、みんながそれぞれのペースで過ごしている街だ。

Café terraces in Paris are always bustling with conversation, even during weekdays. Every street has a row of little tables and chairs set up, and cafés abound. Strangely, despite the chilly winter air, everyone appears to want to sit outdoors. Looking around during lunch breaks, you may see nuns in their habits, enjoying a game of table tennis. The juxtaposition of their grave facial expressions as they rally and laughter, as they celebrate, is quite lovely. Everyone in Paris seems to be living their lives at their own unique pace.

小さなショルダーバッグには、いつでも絵を描けるようにと、画材を忍ばせておくことにしている。お気に入りの画材は、パリの老舗画材店「セネリエ（Sennelier）」で手に入れたオイルパステル。ピカソやセザンヌ、マティスなど、多くの巨匠たちも通っていた歴史ある店で、パステルの豊かな色と滑らかさから、使うたびにそのクオリティに感動してしまう。「絵になる街」という表現は安っぽく聞こえるかもしれないけど、やはりパリは芸術の都だと感じる。美しい街だ。

I always keep my art supplies in a little shoulder bag so I can draw anytime I want. My favourite tools are oil pastels, which I purchased from a well-known art supply store, Sennelier, in Paris. Many great artists, including Picasso, Cézanne, and Matisse, frequented this historic establishment, and I am constantly amazed by the quality of the pastels, which have rich tones and a silky texture. The phrase “a picturesque city” may seem clichéd, but I believe Paris is the city of art. It’s a gorgeous place.

スーツケースを広げると、パートナーと一緒に飼っている犬たちが、待ってましたと言わんばかりに駆け寄ってくる。お土産をねだっているのか、鼻をクンクンさせて中身のチェックに余念がない。スーツケースの内側にあるメッシュポケットは仕切りがたくさんあって、細かいものを整理しやすいのが嬉しい。お土産は、ついフランスのナチュラルワインを選んでしまうことが多い。可愛いラベルは棚に並んでいるのを見ているだけで楽しくなるし、みんなで乾杯もできる。そんなちょっとしたことも、旅の余韻として残っていく。

When I open my suitcase, the dogs that I own with my partner come running, as if to say, “I’ve been waiting for this moment!” They are most likely asking for souvenirs and inspecting the contents of the suitcase. The mesh compartments inside the suitcase include several pockets, which are ideal for organising small items. When it comes to mementoes, I frequently choose natural French wine. The charming labels are fun to look at on their own, and we can all raise a glass together. Little items like that will serve as a lasting reminder of your travels.
